FULL OF ORIGIN. FULL OF FLAVOUR. FULL OF LIFE.

FULL OF ORIGIN. FULL OF FLAVOUR. FULL OF LIFE.

WHY WE DID IT

Loomshed’s home is the Outer Hebrides. Go to the very north west corner of Scotland and turn left for 30 miles out into the Atlantic.

Rugged granite mountains, soaring eagles, deep sea lochs and endless white-sand beaches. A special place where you maintain traditions, respect the elements and look out for each other.

Loomshed aims to bring you a flavour of our home. Delicious products, honest rather than fancy that rekindle memories of the Hebrides wherever you are in the world.

A range of locally-made Hebridean food and drink that celebrates our landscape, our crofting heritage but most importantly the character of the people who live here.

And in doing so give young Hebrideans a reason to stay, or equally return and make their careers on the islands rather than seeking adventure and opportunity further afield

A young islander will take charge of each product in our range, as we grow, to showcase their talents, develop their business within the Loomshed family, and breathe new life into the islands.

WELCOME TO THE TAP ROOM

Loomshed launched with a craft brewery on the edge of Tarbert in Harris making a range of local speciality beers. As well as a cracking range of beers, this gives us a hub, where people can pop in, pass the time of day, share ideas and develop new products and recipes.

As the saying goes, good things come in small packages. What our brewery lacks in scale it more than makes up for in scenery – looking back as it does over the Minch towards the Scottish mainland.

We considered lots of options for our launch product but noticed visitors always ask if there is a local beer and crucially we knew a talented young brewer who wanted to start a brewery.

He has now perfected his recipes and crucially is brewing beer. We are now open and would love to share a glass of his pride and joy.

Find us on the outskirts of Tarbert, the main village on the Isle of Harris, on the road out to Scalpay and a quick hop from where the ferry arrives each day from Skye. Look for the crofter on the side of the building….

We enjoy a “so-hoppy-it-hurts” pale ale as much as anyone, but it’s hard to confuse Harris with Brooklyn, so our beers will reflect the more understated heritage of Scottish and British brewing, including farm-fresh British hops, Scottish barley and, of course that oh-so-soft Hebridean water.

WHAT WILL YOU HAVE?

We’ve made two “house” beers, for 2019, both hand-made in the brewery, both named after island characters, and both sold in bars, shops and restaurants throughout the islands.

Our “CROFTER” IPA (or Island Pale Ale) is named after the small-scale collaborative farmers who fought against oppression for the right to farm their land. A “British” IPA with robust malt foundation with two hop varieties to add depth of flavour. Look for earthy pine-cones and green-tea ‘matcha’ followed by fruity citrus and blackcurrant.

“IASGAIR” means fisherman in the islands’ native Gaelic. Our Craft lager pays tribute to the resolve of all Hebrideans down the centuries, who have gone to sea. A clean bite from the hops gives way to biscuit-malt sweetness. Together they create a balanced taste, and a refreshing but full-flavoured beer.

We will also have a range of special and seasonal brews for you to try in the tap-room.

OPENING HOURS:

THIG A-STEACH

A native of the Isle of Mull, our brewer Calum (or A’ Ghruidair in Gaelic) grew up immersed in both the Scottish landscape and the Gaelic language, spending his childhood on country estates across the Highlands.

Approachable and down-to-earth, Calum is a typically resourceful islander who aways has three projects on the go and spends his free-time tinkering.

Either he is working out where to keep his bees on Harris, growing gourmet mushrooms on the moor behind the brewery, or creating a DIY beer chiller for our tap-room.

Beer is his first love, and he was lured to Edinburgh to study at the world-reknowned brewing and distilling course at Herriot-Watt University.

Rather than accept an offer from a faceless multinational corporation, he decided to return to the Hebrides, make his home on the islands and pursue his dream of opening his own brewery at the grand old age of 23!
